Lecture: Hosting CTFs with Berlyne

Problem based learning in IT security

Berlyne is free software and lets you create problems, following the principles of problem based learning. Berlyne can be used to host authentic Capture The Flag competitions in your own infrastructure. This talk explains what problem based learning is (and why it works well in IT security education), how to use Berlyne and how to extend it with own problems.

Berlyne serves the purpose of teaching applied IT security to developers and (pen)testers. It makes it possible for everyone to host authentic Capture The Flag competitions [CTFs] in their own company or institution. This talk will give a brief introduction to problem based learning and CTFs. It will also show that a vast number of IT security training platforms use counterproductive methods. Using Berlyne and example problems it will be shown how problem based learning can help to transform fragmented theoretical knowledge into applicable skills. A live demo will demonstrate how Berlyne can be used to set-up a CTF within seconds and how to create your very own problems.
