Software Freedom Means Business Value

<track>A decade of Free and Open Source Software</track>
<type>lecture</type>

At a time when open source has "won", when the majority of businesses are using and even planning to contribute to open source and when corporate trade associations are racing to start new "foundations" (actually trade associations) as they did a decade ago with standards bodies, it is more important than ever to return to the principle of software freedom. That doesn't mean preferring ideology over business effectiveness. I'll be explaining why.

<track>Open Source to go</track>
<type>lecture</type>

Open source is built on volunteer hours. Using best practice in creating and reviewing patches means we're making the most of those volunteer hours - both from contributors but also from those overworked maintainers.

Whether your code is being reviewed by colleagues or an open source project maintainer, you want to get your changes accepted as easily as possible. This session is full of practical advice on how to prepare a perfect pull request, and how to evaluate and accept patches from other people into your project. Inspecting the code, testing the feature, communicating your changes and perhaps choosing to reject the changes - all of these will be covered from an expert who has seen it all before and has the stories to tell to prove it. Recommended for anyone who collaborates on a project with other people.

Most computer users nowadays are nontechnical people who have a mental model of what they expect from a computer based on their experience with TV sets and stereos: you buy it, plug it in, and it works perfectly for the next 10 years. Computers aren't like that, which leads to frustration.

Part of the problem is the operating system, which is often millions of lines of kernel code, each of which can potentially bring the system down. As long as we maintain the current structure of the operating system as a huge single monolithic program full of foreign code device drivers) and running in kernel mode, the situation will not improve.

In an attempt to provide better reliability and security, we have
created a new multiserver operating system, MINIX 3, with only 15,000 lines in kernel and the rest of the operating system split up into small components each running as a separate user-mode processes.
It is available for the x86 and ARM for embedded systems. The talk will discuss the design of the system and some of unique aspects, such as live update--the ability to replace the operating system with a new version while it is running without affecting running applications.

A JPEG is a JPEG and nothing changed since 1992? Think again! Automated compression quality detection, advanced dithering algorithms, saliency mapping and computer vision - get a glimpse at what the image optimization open source community has been up to!

Any website on the planet is 62% pure image data. We use images to convey emotion, elicit an action or simply to amuse our peers. They show holiday photos, pie charts or animated cats.

To the unitiated, nothing much has changed since the JPEG file format was standardized in 1992 and GIFs became capable of showing multiple frames of cat mischief.

But under the hood, the complex realm of raster and vector images is ever changing: new encoders use cues from the fields of computer vision and machine learning to optimize image data, old formats learn new tricks and completely new image formats try to take the stage.

Many of these developments are possible thanks to open source software: only enhancements that are open and can be thoroughly tested can be accepted into browsers and image manipulation libraries.

In this talk, we will embark on a tour de force of all major developments in image optimization, bringing attendees up to speed on which encoders and libraries to keep an eye on and where to contribute.

XMPP 2015 - challenges of modern day instant messaging

<track>Open Source to go</track>
<type>lecture</type>

There are many instant messaging solutions. Some of them are open source yet only a few rely on open and established protocols. Nonetheless utilizing open standards is a keystone to not just creating the next hype but to create a lasting solution that will outlive its competition.
XMPP is such a standard and has been around for over a decade. Unfortunately in the past XMPP had had a hard time adapting to the challenges of mobile and multi-device environments. However in the last 18 month the XMPP community was able to overcome a lot of these problems.
This talk is about how we solved the problems of unreliable connections, power consumption and message synchronization. It is also a talk about the remaining challenges and possible solutions.

The talk will mostly draw from the speakers experience in developing a state of the art XMPP client for Android smart phones called Conversations (http://conversations.im).
After giving a brief introduction to XMPP the talk will provide further information on

* Stream Management
* Client State Indication
* Message Archive Management
* End to End Encryption
* Group chats

We try to explain some of the problems Nagios has had for years, what the differences to Icinga are, and how Icinga 2 can ease up monitoring in small, as well as really big environments.

Most sysadmins have a love-hate relationship with Nagios based monitoring solutions. Backed by a sizable community, users have learned to live with it’s shortcomings in scaling, configuration, and modern integration options.

Taking advantage of the tremendous number of supported hard- and software, Icinga leaves all legacy limitations behind. It delivers an easily
scalable solution, with clustering, load balancing, automated replication,
and even business process monitoring out-of-the-box. Based on a new
configuration format with advanced language features - like conditional
processing and complex type support - monitoring agile environments works like a breeze. Existing modules for Puppet, Chef and Ansible ramp up the rollout time and ensure a continuous and up to date monitoring environment.

The talk will demonstrate how popular tools such as Graphite, Logstash, or Graylog integrate better and easier than ever before. In addition to that we’ll introduce the new Icinga Web 2 interface and give a brief
introduction into the technical architecture.

"Yet another monitoring solution?"

Beispielsweise:
- Interaktive Charts
- Monitoring mit Satelliten (verteiltes Monitoring)
- Monitoring in verschiedenen logischen Zonen (Lokal, Intranet, DMZ, Internet, weitere Zonen)

When working with webservers it's sometimes necessary to introduce some dynamic parts in the life cycle of an HTTP process. nginx provides this possibilities with an integration of Lua. On the example of dynamic SSL certificate creation we explore the capabilities of Lua within the core of nginx.

Explore the ecosystem around nginx and it's scriptability high performance programming environment provided by Lua. Learn how Lua hooks into the core of nginx.
In an introduction we'll become acquainted with the Lua programming end embedding nginx. We build up knowledge about the capabilities like header manipulation, serving dynamic content, serving SSL certificates, modifying proxy responses and talking to caches and databases. With the gathered knowledge we create our own web server extension that servers dynamically generated SSL certificates.

REST APIs dokumentieren mit Swagger

<track>Web Development</track>
<type>lecture</type>

</abstract>

A new communication framework has entered the Web Platform - WebRTC. Using the WebRTC protocols and APIs allows for a whole new paradigm of Web Application development, especially P2P apps that communicate with each other without a central server. In this talk I will dive into the possibilities of implementing a reliable, server-less P2P infrastructure for applications and data sharing.
</abstract>

The talk provides a short overview over WebRTC and then dives deep into the details of Web-based P2P applications. I will talk about my experiences over the last two years of implementing a generic P2P framework and JavaScript library. This library allows developers to build their own server-less applications on top of a reliable infrastructure provided by the framework. I will also talk about some ideas for advancing the framework and implementing the vision of a server-less Web. Some questions I will talk about are:

* What are the requirements of server-less P2P applications?
* What does WebRTC provide in order to fulfill these requirements?
* How are server-less applications (running in Web browsers) interconnected and what are the problems?
* How is content addressed and transferred between peers?
* How does content lookup work without a central server?

Webcrawler

Bau dir deine eigene WWW-API

<track>Web Development</track>
<type>lecture</type>

<abstract>
Webcrawler

Bau dir deine eigene WWW-API

The crawling is strong in you
</abstract>

The evolution of storage on Linux

<track>A decade of Free and Open Source Software</track>
<type>lecture</type>

Linux and Open Source Software have always played a crucial role in data centers to provide storage in various ways. In this talk, Lenz will give an overview of how storage on Linux has evolved over the years, from local file systems to scalable file systems, logical volume managers and cluster file systems to today's modern file systems and distributed, parallel and fault-tolerant file systems.

Linux and Open Source Software have truly become critical pieces of infrastructure in today's data centers. Especially when it comes to managing and providing storage for other systems, the options are seemingly endless.

This talk attempts to give an overview of how storage on Linux evolved over the years. It will cover well-established concepts like local file systems, logical volume managers and the usual suspects of how these local file systems are made available to clients over the network (e.g. SMB, NFS).

We'll also discuss options to provide redundancy or scalability, introducing technologies like DRBD or cluster file systems like OCFS2 or GFS2.

But the functionality and feature set of local file systems has improved significantly over the years as well; Btrfs and ZFS on Linux will be introduced in this context and how they differ from traditional file systems.

And finally, the talk will outline some of today's storage requirements and challenges and how Linux and Open Source Software continue to play a key role in addressing these, via distributed, parallel and fault-tolerant file systems like Ceph, Gluster or Lustre.

A study of weaknesses in the pipeline of rapidly advancing sensory development

<track>Security</track>
<type>lecture</type>

<abstract>
In this hour long presentation, we consider weaknesses in the pipeline of advancing sensor developments and demonstrate passive and active attacks on hypothetical critical infrastructure using real sensor devices. This presentation does not use scare tactics, but rather hacks along in a playful and humorous way.

We study three models of IoT system design, machine to machine (M2M), human to machine (H2M), and a hybrid M2M/H2M, considering attack vectors of each. We move to media, examining weak points in Bluetooth, WiFi, and copper cabled connectivity with mention to IPv6, ZigBee, and RFID as well. We cover typical protocols of IoT communications when collecting telemetry data and passing it on to a message bus. Moving to the science of telemetry, a field study illustrates typical use cases for sensor data collection. We wrap up by considering the points of weakness of a sensor connected critical infrastructure.

Demonstrations of Bluetooth sensor communication, message publishing, server and architecture inspection, packet captures, and reverse engineering serve to illustrate the topics at hand. Attacks using Ubertooth, WiFi Pineapples, and LAN tap demonstrate the weakness of existing products.

Fossology the X-ray radioscopic equipment for the analysis of Open Source Packages

<track>Acknowledging Contributions</track>
<type>lecture</type>

The use of open source software involves open source licenses which define the intentions of the authors when using the software. With a growing number of both licenses and open source packages, an open source tool for analyzing software and their licenses is crucial support. The Fossology project provides such analysis. The presentation will explain recent conceptual and technical changes to the Fossology project.

For the analysis of open source licenses, the Fossology software has been extended in the recent months with a three-way strategy in mind:
•	Providing efficient scan approaches to identify licenses in the open source package: Identifying licenses in open source software can be, depending on the actual project, a tedious task: Today many variants and versions of open source licenses are published: The technical challenge lies in precisely determining the particular variant / version of license and exclude other possibilities with lowest manual inspection effort as possible.
•	Nevertheless, manual inspection is inevitable, for example for new, unknown or author-specific licenses. This represents also the rationale with the recently updated SPDX standard, which distinguishes between found and concluded license when it comes to determine the actual license condition. As a result, the next challenge to solve is: How to provide an efficient UI when potentially manually dealing with thousands of files with license information?
•	Reuse of license decisions can lead to a much lower manual inspection effort for future scans and thus is key for easier open source adoption. However, the need to carefully reuse applying decisions and leaving open points for clarification requires a conservative strategy of reuse on the other hand.
The Fossology open source software has been evolved to cover the above, which includes new approaches and a number of technical adaptations. The presentation will also cover collaboration aspects of contributing to the Fossology community and an outlook of evolving license analysis in the future.

CloudABI

Cloud computing meets fine-grained capabilities

<track>Security</track>
<type>lecture</type>

CloudABI is a new runtime environment that attempts to make it easier to use UNIX-like operating systems at the core of a cluster/cloud computing platform.

Instead of offering full machine virtualization (e.g., KVM, Xen, bhyve) or requiring the use of intrusive OS-level virtualization techniques (e.g., LXC, FreeBSD Jails, Solaris Zones), end users can simply provide a set of binaries that communicate with the operating system over a secure and compact POSIX-like interface. CloudABI allows you to run untrusted programs directly on top of a UNIX kernel, without compromising security and without requiring complex configuration.

CloudABI makes strong use of capability-based security. Instead of determining the rights of an application through complex ACLs, access to resources is determined by a set of tokens (in this case, file descriptors) that can be altered at run-time. This allows software engineers to harden their software by applying 'defense in depth'.

In this presentation I will discuss several design aspects of CloudABI and how it can be used to make UNIX software more reliable, more secure and easier to test and deploy.

Minix3 - going from educational showcase to day-to-day productive use

<track>other</track>
<type>lecture</type>

The talk makes a proposal, how to transform an educational-based operating system towards a mature and reliable day to day operating system.

The open source operating system Minix3 was developed for educational
use by Andrew S. Tanenbaum. With the main focus on teaching and
education, the operating system clearly shows how slim a micro
kernel can be. The road from an implementation that is easy-to-use
for teaching towards a productive use system seems to be to drill
down all those components needed for supporting heterogenous
hardware while not mandatory for making the minimal system run. Our
aim is to highlight some of those most important components which
are needed to have Minix3 easier rolled out in the day-to-day
productive use world. On evaluating the code base and favoring the
micro kernel principles, we had some insights and additional
concepts to give the micro kernel concept a higher level or
production readiness which we like to discuss here.

SysDB — Alle Systeminformationen auf einen Blick

The System Database

<track>System Administration</track>
<type>lecture</type>

<track>System Administration</track>
<type>lecture</type>

<type>lecture</type>

Tech companies that want to stay relevant better learn to learn. More specifically they need employees that learn fast and share their knowledge. But how to make time for that?

We invest 10% of our time to hold an Open Space every other Friday. We're still thrilled with the results!

What if people in your company shared their knowledge? What if you could turn drab meetings into high energy sessions? What if you could gather everyone you needed to discuss a problem without hassle and breaking their flow? What if you could try out new technologies easily?

What would you be willing to do to gain the above? We reach it by investing 10% of our time to hold an Open Space every other Friday. We're still thrilled with the results!

This talk will take you on a 4 year journey, retracing our steps from adopting Scrum to introducing 10% slack time with underwhelming results to our current happy state.

Pull Requests: Not Just For Code Anymore

<track>Culture</track>
<type>lecture</type>

Many companies have copied the fork-and-pull-request model from open source because it works so well, even for closed-source projects. So why are company processes and policies written in isolation with no collaboration? I'll present New Relic's implementation of an open-source-inspired workflow that drives all of our internal company processes.

What if, instead of 8AM Monday e-mails from on high announcing a new policy change, everyone got a chance to collaborate freely on proposed changes - without meetings? What if all aspects of a company's internal processes and culture, from hiring policies to technical architecture to code reviews to expense reporting, were not only clearly documented, but openly editable? What if every single employee in a company could effect sweeping change in how the company did business, just by a simple pull request?

The open-source community writes software this way, and has proven it can work. At New Relic, we've ditched laborious process meetings and long-running e-mail chains in favor of Github Pages and pull requests. In this talk, I'll explain how we've made this work and show you the tools and “meta-process” we use to pull it off. I'll also share our results and lessons learned, and maybe even inspire you to start a similar revolution at your company.

Data Warehouse Monitoring mit Icinga 2

<track>Databases</track>
<type>lecture</type>

Welche CPU-Last erzeugt ein ETL-Prozess

the tale of 600.000 queries per second

<track>Databases</track>
<type>lecture</type>

The world of high availability mysql has seen several solutions over the last decade or so. All of them were flawed in some way, none were perfect. One of the new kids on the block is Galera cluster for MySQL. It's fully open source and scales surprisingly well. In this talk we'll look at a case study of how we deployed a 600k QPS cluster sucessfully

We'll talk about the challenges in setting up galera and the lessons we learned along the way. The whole cluster was deployed with puppet, so we'll discuss how that works as well.
There are some very specific things you need to know when deploying galera and especially what happens when it breaks.

Humanising Math and Physics

(on Computer Science)

<track>Culture</track>
<type>lecture</type>

There are some myths around Science - it's boring, useless, difficult. Many of them are heard while we are young, and many people tend to take then for the entire life. Science is very important, specially on Computer Science and Engineering, for building the basis of our logical thinking.

How much time did you spend on College criticizing the great amount of Math and Physics classes? How many times did you cry after a bad grade on Calculus lessons? Do you feel you really learned the basis of Physics during your classes?

There are some myths around Science - it's boring, useless, difficult.
This talk will talk about this cultural problem we have on teaching Science subjects and give some tips on how can we humanise this topic and apply them on Computer Science. Through didactic and entertaining examples, any class may become more interesting.
Some topics that will be covered:
- Science during childhood - do teachers at school have necessary motivation to humanise Science?
- Science heroes - Transforming our Mathematicians into the new Super Man
- Science on graduation courses - How does it help our logical thinking on Computer Science and Engineering courses?
- Science after College - transforming it into a passion
- Techniques to motivate people to like Science
- Techniques to teach Science topics to people
- Organizing Science meetups

On the scale of things too horrible to contemplate, "document-altering scanner" is right up there with "flesh-eating bacteria". Since 2006, Xerox scancopiers literally are making stuff up. They, for example, replace digits with others in scans. The replacement digits are layouted perfectly into the page, so the errors are hard to see. Sounds unbelievably insidious, but it's true. Drug prescriptions, construction plans, just anything can be affected.

David will not only present how he found the bug and explain it to you in an easily understandable way, suitable for non-teccies as well as teccies. He will also cover in an entertaining fashion how it feels to suddenly face a world-class enterprise in the public, how to disclose responsibly, how to handle a PR storm properly, and how one can try to force the correction of such a disastrous bug. Just anyone may easily encounter such a situation, so David will derive take-home messages for you to act on, which might save *your* bacon one day. For the conspiracy theorists, David will elaborate what all of this has to do with Barack Obama's birth certificate.

"Xerox Can Fix Number-Switching Scanners, but Not Altered Docs", titled "Businessweek" pointedly. Documents produced by hundreds of thousands of devices across enterprises world-wide are now legally challengeable. Even worse: As users have to patch their devices theirselves, odds are that there still are lots and lots of number-changing copiers out there. So, spread the word! It's important you attend.

Einfaches Text-Format schreiben -- viele komplexe Formate (HTML, DOCX, ODT, EPUB, PDF,....) erzeugen

<track>Development</track>
<type>workshop</type>

<abstract>

</abstract>

Markdown

Regel deklarieren sollte)

Un-nummerierte Aufzählungen

Code-Beispiele:
pandoc --to=html
erzeugt HTML-Ausgabe

kursiv hervorgehobene Wörter

fett hervorgehobene Wörter

fett+kursiv hervorgehobene Wörter

Hyper-Links

Bilder

Code-Blöcke

Tabellen

<track>Web Development</track>
<type>workshop</type>

Hands-on AngularJS

Hands-on Ember.js

Diskussion

WebSocket - WS^2 2.0

<track>Web Development</track>
<type>workshop</type>

At eZ we have been lucky to work with so many talented developers in the PHP and Symfony community, and one of the projects we have so far have contributed to in ideas and code and also benefitted from is FOSHttpCache, a super charged Http Cache implementation with tagging of content, varying of cache by user cache, support for Varnish, Symfony Proxy and Nginx, and much more. But it can still be improved, multi tagging support for Symfony Proxy, and Stale cache handling on purges by tags are two currently missing features for handling all possible high load situations.

So you decided that automated testing is awesome and you plan to do it all the time. Every new feature gets a mix of UI-level tests and unit-level tests, since following the "test pyramid" approach is the best way to avoid this whole discussion about how "Integration Tests Are a Scam" and "Unit Testing is Dead".
You even start to write the tests first but after a couple of weeks things get weird. Suddenly you find yourself spending way too much of time on maintaining the test suite. The burden of tests of any level seem to grow disproportionally and you start wondering if automated testing might just not work for you.
But don't fret! And let me show you how to combine the best of BDD, TDD and even DDD to supercharge your test suite by combining the advantages of different testing levels while mitigating their weaknesses. And why the test pyramid is a lie.

Dealing with Cross Site Scripting: What is it? Why is it dangerous? And what can be done about it?

It's 2015 and Cross Site Scripting (XSS) attacks are still ranking high in OWASP's "Top Ten Security Risks".

So what is this XSS and what harm it can do to your site? And more important: How can we prevent those kind of attacks on our websites?I'll talk about some of the bad advice (unfortunately being repeated on the web over and over again) and show you better, more sustainable approaches.

This talk will introduce, explain and analyze the new language constructs of javascript introduced by ES6. We will compare the new features to the existing ones and will explain where their benefits and drawbacks are, also we will show which best practices can be replaced by new best practices using ES6. Finally we will cover the most important part. How can we use it? Which environments already support ES6 and how can we use it in other environments?

This talk is highly technical and will contain plenty of code-examples. It is designed for those who are already familiar with JavaScript development.

The free software movement has twin goals: promoting access to software through users' freedom to share, and empowering users by giving them control over their technology. For all our movement's success, we have been much more successful at the former. I will use data from free software and from several related movements to explain why promoting empowerment is systematically more difficult than promoting access and I will explore how our movement might address the second challenge in the future.

Cultivating Empathy

<track>Culture</track>
<type>lecture</type>

When considering how to design products, teams or even common everyday household objects, empathy often doesn't end up on the required features list. Yet, without empathy, teams with enormous technical skills can fail in their quest to deliver quality products to their users. Incredible projects fail to create communities because they don't exercise it. Fail at empathy and your chances of failing at everything skyrocket.

Contrary to what you may have heard, empathy is not something you're innately born with - it's a skill that can be learned, cultivated, refined and taught to others. In this presentation, Leslie Hawthorn will discuss the value of empathy, how you can cultivate in yourself and your organizational culture, and conclude with concrete steps for leveling up in your interactions with your fellow human beings.

Building a culture of courage

<track>Culture</track>
<type>lecture</type>

At my new job, I was surprised about my colleagues reactions to my mistakes. No blame! People trust me to own my mistakes and fix them! Complex systems are brittle. Developers work in a constant state of new things-not-quite-working-yet. Programming in pairs and code reviews help us. But what about the quality of human interaction? How can we build a culture of blamelessness and why is it crucial for learning and for brave decision making?

On the first day of my new job, I contributed code that went live to the website we are building. After a month, I contributed some code that caused alerts. I felt bad and it was reverted quickly, never making it to the site. Still, I was surprised about how my colleagues reacted. They did not blame me! I felt support. These people have my back. I experienced that it is okay to make mistakes and people trust me to fix them. After my years in grad school this was a refreshingly new experience!

People working with complex systems know they are brittle, because they are complex. Code that works well is nice, but working code also means everything is done - how boring! Programmers and builders live in a constant state of things-not-quite-working-yet, pushing this boundary every day. Even though it might be just software, this can be a challenging environment.

Programming culture is rife with stereotypes of lone-wolf coders. On hacker news, people like to "well-actually" each other. I did it, and maybe you do it too. Quite often, we face our coding questions all alone. With computers, we fight unforgiving machines, and usually the mistakes in our systems are based on human decisions. Programming in pairs and code reviews are techniques to improve these decisions by adding an extra set of eyes and opinions. These tools are excellent to use when working on a challenging complex system together and are known techniques by now.

But what about the quality of human interaction? How can we build a culture of blamelessness and why is it crucial for learning and brave decision making?

Dokumentation von Vorträgen mit freier Software

<track>Media</track>
<type>lecture</type>

Monitoring her muss.

geben, welche Entwicklungen anstehen.

kam.

Unsere Toolchain beinhaltet unter anderem:

* FFmpeg / Gstreamer

* Oggfwd

* Nginx + RTMP Module

* Icecast2

* Debian stable

* Ansible

Open Roberta Lab - Visual Online Programming Environment for Computer Kids

<track>New Kids On The Net</track>
<type>lecture</type>

Open Roberta Lab - Visual Online Programming Environment for Computer Kids

The Google funded Open Roberta project continuous the Fraunhofer IAIS initiative ”Roberta - Learning with Robots”. Roberta aims at engag- ing and motivating girls and boys to take a sustained long-term interest in information technology, technology and the natural sciences (STEM). For more than ten years, this underlying initiative successfully enabled girls and boys to explore the world of robots and to learn about computer science and technology in a playful way. With more than 30.000 participating children and young people in over 600 documented Roberta courses a year - Roberta has become a permanent fixture in the German education landscape.
The aim of Open Roberta is to overcome technical and professional barriers for teachers and students alike at home or in the classrooms. The free to use cloud-based Open Roberta Lab consists of graphical programming tools that enable beginners to seamlessly start coding without long-winded system installations, setups or additional technology getting in the way.
In its first available release, Open Roberta enables children and adolescents to program LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robots in the beginning. A variety of different visual programming blocks are provided to interact with motors, sensors and the core of LEGO robots, the EV3-Brick. Upcoming software releases are aiming at a broader online programming support for additional educational hardware (like robots, toys, etc.). The necessary machine code translations are part of our new invented NEPO programming language which is build into Open Roberta.
The created technology and its concepts are free to use for anyone and are available as open source. In a first step, the development team at the Fraun- hofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems reached out to teachers, IT and education experts within the partnering Roberta network as well as to universities and their students to involve them in the develop- ment work. In the ongoing second step, the open-source community has been opened to all interested parties and programmers. By doing that Roberta still follows its main mission namely the encouragement of female newbies in order to help them becoming role models for the next generation of pro- gramming experts.
The presentation will address current limitations of available classroom pro- gramming solutions and is going to showcase Open Robertas online coding capabilities. A further aspect of the talk will be the introduction of the NEPO abstraction language as a core concept for upcoming hardware com- munication.

A Solution to the Backup Inconvenience

Fast, Secure and Efficient Backups with "restic"

<track>other</track>
<type>lecture</type>

Secure and efficient backups can be cumbersome. "restic" is a new, easy-to-use, very fast backup application that does deduplication and crypto right. And it's free software!

"restic" is a program that does backups right. The design goals are:

Easy: Doing backups should be a frictionless process, otherwise you are tempted to skip it. Restic should be easy to configure and use, so that in the unlikely event of a data loss you can just restore it. Likewise, restoring data should not be complicated.

Fast: Backing up your data with restic should only be limited by your network or harddisk bandwidth so that you can backup your files every day. Nobody does backups if it takes too much time. Restoring backups should only transfer data that is needed for the files that are to be restored, so that this process is also fast.

Verifiable: Much more important than backup is restore, so restic enables you to easily verify that all data can be restored.

Secure: Restic uses cryptography to guarantee confidentiality and integrity of your data. The location the backup data is stored is assumed not to be a trusted environment (e.g. a shared
space where others like system administrators are able to access your backups). Restic is built to secure your data against such attackers.

Efficient: With the growth of data, additional snapshots should only take the storage of the actual increment. Even more, duplicate data should be de-duplicated before it is actually written to the storage backend to save precious backup space.

During the talk we will demonstrate several use cases live, present the ideas behind restic, the project organization and how to get started.

Was macht der Datenschutzbeauftragte?

Erfolreiche Linux Install Partys?

The Way We Build Systems is (Still) Wrong

<track>System Administration</track>
<type>lecture</type>

In this talk, I'll offer my contrarian view on the latest hyped containerization technologies, why I think the new approach is flawed and how we can usefully blend the old and new prevailing wisdom to build systems that actually scale.

Building systems is hard and tedious work.

Building scalable systems is much harder.

Don't despair, though, we hear; there are tons of amazing services
nowadays which will help you and make building scalable systems easy,
quick, error-free and totally DevOps-compliant, as well.

Docker and other containerization tools are the latest hot, new
technology. Everyone is talking about them: the Twitterati, major
analyst firms and, as HackerNews will tell you, If it's good enough
for Google, it's good enough for you. We seem to have quickly reached
universal agreement: containers are the future, everyone needs
Microservices, and if you're not Cloud-Native your business or project
is dead already. These technologies are supposed to solve all the
issues system engineers face when building scalable systems.

Unfortunately, as so often, the reality is far different than the hype.

Having been a member of the system engineering team at Booking.com, a
small Amsterdam hotel reservations startup turned world’s largest
hotel booking site, I’ve had the opportunity to experience massive
growth of our systems infrastructure. We went from less than tens of
MySQL servers to several thousand database servers, achieved 60% year
over year growth in site visitors, infrastructure needs *and* brand
new employees I've had the opportunity to see what works inside a
company that builds at scale, and a lot of what we're hearing will be
the next big thing just isn't going to work.

Automation, configuration management, A/B testing, quick deployments,
failing fast, and no-blame reviews work well and allow for a
high-growth environment. For these techniques to work however, we need
strong, cross-functional teams. We need systems engineers, developers
and product owners working closely together defining requirements and
delivering results. Many of these lessons have been codified by the
DevOps movement and have been applied by other industry players as
well.

The problem with Docker and many other container solutions, however,
is that they actually repudiate these lessons and the marketing is
leading people down the wrong path.

Instead of cross-functional teams working together on delivering
working software, we’re seeing the return of the old and dreaded “It
works on my machine, ship it!” attitude: It somehow worked on the
developer’s machine, we packed it up into a Docker image and now it’s
ready in production.

This talk tries to clarify the different requirements of development
vs. production operations. Development is completely results driven.
It doesn’t matter how we got there, as long as we reached the
destination. Operations is more focused on the process of getting to
the destination. It needs to be repeatable and well understood.

Combining the two is the challenge all successfully growing companies
have to face.

Container technologies and, specifically, their current messaging
about use cases falls short. Right now, the hype trifecta is not yet
ready for helping companies scale their systems and maintain them.
It's actually leading you to waste time building infrastructure you do
not need.

In this talk, I'll offer my contrarian view on the latest hyped
technologies, why I think the new approach is flawed and how we can
usefully blend the old and new prevailing wisdom to build systems that
actually scale.

<track>Security</track>
<type>lecture</type>

With free software, anyone can inspect the source code for malicious flaws. But Debian like most distribnutions provides binary packages to its users. The idea of “deterministic” or “reproducible” builds is to empower anyone to verify that no flaws have been introduced during the build process by reproducing byte-for-byte identical binary packages from a given source.

This talk will explain the current status of the Debian Reproducible Builds project, how this is relevant for the complete free software eco system and how you can contribute.

Cryptomator is the first ever open source application specifically developed to transparently encrypt files before they are sync'ed with your personal cloud storage space.

The number of free cloud storage services has increased dramatically over the last years. Great for personal backups, right? No?

We, H-BRS students ourselves, decided that the cloud isn't trustworthy enough for our sensitive data. So we googled for encryption software but didn't find anything suitable:

Besides several commercial applications, there are a lot of open source encryption apps out there. But so far none of them have been developed with synchronization needs of cloud storage providers and end-user friendly usability in mind.

So we decided - out of our own needs - to start such a project. Today we are happy to present the purely community-driven open source project Cryptomator to all the people, who would like to use the cloud but have not trusted the providers.

Music Production under GNU/Linux

Free Culture made with Free Software

<track>Media</track>
<type>lecture</type>

This
talk will be about Free Culture
and Free
Software in the context of computer music production.
GNU/Linux is often used by musicians who want to share their music.

Free
Cultural Works are defined by the same four freedoms that make free
software. This includes the freedom to redistribute copies, either with
or without modification. Under todays copyright
it is usually not allowed to redistribute copies of published works.
You will have to identify the author and then ask before redistributing
the work. This can be painful if there are many authers or if the author
is unknown. If you want to allow others to share your works you can
choose to apply a free Creative Commons license or the GNU GPL.
For software there is another requirement to qualify as free. You need
to have the practical ability to modify the software. Without sourcecode
it is nealy impossible to make changes in a computer program. The GNU
GPL, invented by Richard Stallman asserts that modified versions of a
program remain free for all its users by requiring anybody to release
the sourcecode if binaries are released. Today it is common that a free
program has thousands of copyright holders. The Linux kernel is just one
example, there are many other programs in GNU system distributions that
were contributed by different authors.
There are special audio distributions for making music, such as Musix.
These include programs such as Ardour for recording and mixing
audio. Sequencers such as Rosegarden are good to
compose songs. If you want to record real instruments, you will need
proper recording hardware. Not all soundcards will work with Free
Software but most USB devices will, as long they are class compliant.
Instead of using recording hardware you can use software synthesizers
such as ZynAddSubFX.
Finally it is possible to create synthesized singing using Free Software
such as Cadencii and
v.Connect-STAND.
There are also many free plugins that you can use in the final mixdown
such as the calf
plugins which provide reverb and equalization.
Once your work is finished, you can publish it through the internet in a
format that is DRM-free such as
Ogg
Vorbis or FLAC. Many online music services such iTunes and
Spotify do not work without non-free software, so these should be
avoided. Additionally it it impossible to upload your music to this
services without an agrregator. However some aggreators such as <a

support free formats such as FLAC. Many less known artists sell their
music as self-burned CDs. This way it is possible to to pay for music
anonymously using cash. Using self-burned CDs makes may thigs easier and
avoids burocracy with the GEMA. You can also include source code for
sheet music in free formats such as GNU/Lilypond on the CD. If you want

VGrade - Tux Grades Videos

A command line-based tool for high quality color grading and image processing for cinema-like videos

<track>Media</track>
<type>lecture</type>

SDAPS

Surveying Made Easy

<track>other</track>
<type>lecture</type>

This talk will give an introduction into SDAPS how it works and how it can be used automate surveys or even examinations on paper. In the core SDAPS is an optical mark recognition software that is integrated with LaTeX and LibreOffice. It provides all the utilities to automate simple surveys, including questionnaire creation, manual error correction, and a simple report generation module. Also important is its flexibility to be used for data acquisition by either exporting the data or even interfacing with SDAPS python API directly for specialized applications.

While the core of SDAPS is the optical mark recognition there is a lot more to creating a good utility. Both usability and technical aspects have to be taken into account to achieve the goal of a simple to use utility that is still flexible enough for more complex use cases. With a background for conducting anonymous survey a lot of the feature development to support different use cases was driven by suggestions from the community. Further changes and improvements are now on the way thanks to input from academic users using SDAPS both for surveys and examinations. Especially examinations pose a unique challange as there is a multitude of different ways to conduct these, making custom data processing and workflows necessary. All this poses new challenges to the development of SDAPS as the different requirements should be realized on top of a common core SDAPS code base either by extending SDAPS itself or allowing it to be extended using own code.

A description of contributors.debian.org, the site that Debian uses to collect and acknowledge every contribution to the project. Its aims, its implementation, and where it got two years after its initial deployment.

People seem to identify official recognition with some kind of label, so it was original uderstood that you could only get official recognition from Debian if you were a Debian Maintainer or a Debian Developer. However, there were many more contributors to the project than just DMs and DDs, so in 2013 I started working on a site to make every contribution visible.

The result is contributors.debian.org, for which discussion started at DebConf 2013 and which has been deployed since almost two years.

The site introduces a new role, that of Debian Contributor, that everyone automatically gets when contributing to Debian, and it lists all Debian Contributors. Any Debian Developer can set up a new data feed for the site, and any Debian Contributor can maintain it.

I will introduce the site, how it works and what have been its effects so far.

MARS Light is a kernel-level asynchronous block replication for long distances, supporting disaster recovery / georedundancy.

At 1&1 Internet SE, it has proven reliable for a total of more than 3 millions of operation hours, running on more than 700 centralized storage servers, continuously replicating several petabytes of data.

This talk will explain why long distance replication should be done at block level, and explain the differences to DRBD. Some newer MARS
features like socket bundling / transparent data compression will be presented with performance results.

<track>Cloud</track>
<type>lecture</type>

Make your tests fail

How randomisation adds a whole new dimension to finding bugs in your code

<track>Development</track>
<type>lecture</type>

<abstract>
It's easy as pie: before checking in, your test suite should always be green. Or should it? What if your tests are all green but you forgot to check one important edge case? What if your underlying system environment lets you down, but only under rare conditions that you didn't cover in your tests?

This talk introduces randomised testing as used by projects like Apache Lucene and Elasticsearch based on the Carrotsearch Randomised Testing framework. It has helped uncover (and ultimately fix) a huge number of bugs not only in these project’s source code, but also in the JVM itself which those projects rely on.

Writing unit and integration tests can be tricky: assumptions about your code may not always be true as any number of "this should never happen" log entries in production systems show. When implementing a system that will be integrated in all sorts of expected, unexpected, and outright weird ways by downstream users, testing all possible code paths, configurations and deployment environments gets complicated.

With the Carrotsearch Randomised Testing framework, projects like Apache Lucene and Elasticsearch have introduced a new level to their unit and integration tests. Input values are no longer statically pre-defined but are generated based on developer defined constraints, meaning The test suite is no longer re-run with a static set of input data each time. Instead, every continuous integration run adds to the search space covered. Though generated at random, tests are still reproducible as all configurations are based on specific test seeds that can be used to re-run the test with the exact same configuration.

Add to this randomising the runtime environment by executing tests with various JVM versions and configurations, and you are bound to find cases where your application runs into limitations and bugs in the JVM.

This talk introduces randomised testing as a concept, shows examples of how the Carrotsearch Randomised Testing framework helps with making your test cases more interesting, and provides some insight into how randomising your execution environment can help save downstream users from surprises. All without putting too much strain on your continuous integration resources.

<type>lecture</type>

Strongly typed languages are secure, dynamic schemas are flexible. Having booth at the same time, on the same system is great to build easy to iterate, modularized and flexible applications, but these can also generate some of friction. This friction comes with a set of rules, discipline and best practices around schema versions and data type validations that are crucial to make this very symbiotic systems to work properly.
</abstract>

This talk will touch the topics around the different type of strategies and best practices for schema design and document structure to accommodate these two paradigms.

Over the course of this talk we will be looking into real code scenarios, samples of operations and migration plans. We will have a very small set of slides and lots of code to analyse and run to make has interactive and engaging as possible.

The talk is oriented to developers and architects that are dealing with both strongly typed languages, like java, and love to use Flexible Schema Databases, like MongoDB, and are struggling or looking for references on how to model correctly on how to deal with data schema changes across different applications, versions, iterations, systems.
Newbies or beginners are welcome to this talk since we are not going to be diving deep into MongoDB specifics but much more on the application architecture practices and java coding.

This talk presents a step by step guide for Linux kernel development.

The roots of Linux lie in the community of hobbyist programmers and technical enthusiast. Nowadays still about 15-20% of accepted patches are developed "in mother's basement" by programmers without affiliation.
This talk presents how to take the first steps in Linux kernel development. It covers ways of finding a task as starting point for your first patch and how to submit it. Dos and don'ts of kernel development are discussed and, based on the author's experiences, patches and reactions from the developer community are exemplified to overcome the newcomers' "inhibition threshold".

<abstract>
Application frameworks, database abstraction, template engines: Most modern php applications use third-party libraries for common tasks. Those libraries help us to stay focused without reinventing the wheel. But they also generate new problems: How do we manage those external dependencies? How can we keep them up to date? How do we ensure that future updates to those libraries don't break our application? How do we migrate safely to a new release of the application framework we're using? And how do we communicate with the open-source communities that provide all those useful libraries? In this session, we will have a look at a derailed Symfony application and we will follow its progress from the stabilization of its dependencies to its first open-source contributions.

REST is a concept to exchange data. With the ascent of javascript
frontends like angular.js, REST becomes important even for sites that do
not provide data for external services.
REST is not only about nice URLs, but also about correctly using HTTP.
We will look at representation and stateless applications. This talk is
an introduction for people new to REST and those who want a refresher of
the fundamentals.

Emacs is a classic text editor with an unique premise: Runtime
extensibility and introspection. It has become infamous for its
unprecedented level of malleability its users have demonstrated by
crafting thousands of Emacs packages for turning it into a finely tuned
text editing environment.

This talk will explore to which extent its graphical abilities can be
used to create anything between user interface enhancements to classic
games.
